What Is a Brazilian Wax? Everything You Need to Know Before Your First Appointment
If you’ve never had a Brazilian wax before, you probably have questions. What exactly comes off? Do you have to get completely naked? Does the butt strip really happen? How long does it take? And yes… how bad does it hurt?
You’re definitely not the only one wondering.
A Brazilian wax removes pubic hair from the front, labia, and between the buttocks. You can choose to remove everything or leave some hair in the front, depending on your preference.
At X Rose Beauty in Westchester, Illinois, Brazilian waxing is one of our specialties, so we’re going to walk you through exactly what to expect.
What Does a Brazilian Wax Include?
A full Brazilian typically includes hair removal from:
- The pubic area in the front
- The labia
- The bikini line
- Between the buttocks
You don’t necessarily have to remove every single hair.
Some clients prefer completely bare, while others leave a small strip or triangle in the front. Your waxer should ask what you prefer before getting started.
Brazilian Wax vs. Bikini Wax: What’s the Difference?
This is one of the most common areas of confusion.
A bikini wax generally removes the hair that would be visible outside of a standard bikini or underwear line.
A Brazilian wax goes much further and removes hair from the front, labia, bikini line and between the buttocks.
If you’re looking for a much more complete hair removal service, a Brazilian is usually what you’re thinking of.
How Is a Brazilian Wax Done?
Your waxer works in sections rather than trying to remove everything at once.
The skin is first prepared, and then wax is applied to different areas based on the direction of the hair growth and your anatomy.
You’ll be asked to move into a few different positions so your waxer can safely reach each area.
And don’t overthink the positions.
Everybody’s anatomy is different.
One position may give perfect access for one client and not another. Your waxer may have you adjust your leg, roll onto your side or change positions so they can properly remove the hair from harder-to-reach areas.
The goal isn’t to make you uncomfortable. It’s to make sure you’re actually getting the complete service you’re paying for.
What Does a Brazilian Wax Look Like When It’s Finished?
That depends on what you ask for.
A completely bare Brazilian removes essentially all of the pubic hair included in the service area.
But a Brazilian doesn’t automatically mean you have to be completely bare. You can request that some hair remain in the front while still having the labia, bikini line and backside waxed.
Tell your waxer what you want before the service starts.
Does a Brazilian Wax Include Your Butt?
Yes.
A full Brazilian typically includes the hair between the buttocks.
This part is usually much quicker than first-time clients imagine.
Your waxer may have you roll onto your side, adjust your leg or use another position depending on your anatomy and their technique.
How Long Does a Brazilian Wax Take?
The actual waxing time varies depending on your hair growth, previous hair-removal method, anatomy and your waxer’s technique.
At X Rose Beauty, an experienced Brazilian wax appointment can often be completed in approximately 15 minutes, although first-time appointments or additional skin care may take longer.
Fast doesn’t mean rushed. Technique and experience make a major difference.
How Long Should Your Hair Be Before a Brazilian Wax?
Your wax needs enough hair to grip.
As a general guideline, aim for approximately 1/4 inch of growth.
If you’ve been shaving, allowing roughly two weeks of growth before your appointment can give your waxer more hair to work with, although individual hair growth varies.
And please don’t trim it extremely short because you think you’re helping us.
Sometimes you’re actually making our job harder.
Does a Brazilian Wax Hurt?
You’re removing hair from the root, so yes, you’re going to feel it.
But the experience varies tremendously from person to person.
Your first Brazilian can also feel different from later appointments because your hair may be at different stages of growth, particularly if you’ve been shaving.
This is one reason consistency matters.
Staying on a regular waxing schedule means you’re not repeatedly starting over after months of shaving or regrowth.
For many clients, approximately four weeks works well, although some people need closer to three, five or six weeks depending on their individual hair-growth cycle.
Can You Get a Brazilian Wax on Your Period?
Usually, yes—with the right menstrual product and as long as you’re comfortable.
A tampon, menstrual cup or menstrual disc can allow the area being waxed to remain accessible.
Pads aren’t appropriate during the actual Brazilian service because menstrual blood can be present directly in the treatment area.
If you’re using a tampon, keeping the string tucked away from the waxing area—or shortening it appropriately before the service—can make it easier for your waxer to work without the string getting in the way.
If you’re unsure, contact your waxer before your appointment.
What Should You Do Before Your First Brazilian Wax?
Keep it simple.
Come with enough hair growth for the wax to grab, arrive with clean skin and avoid applying heavy lotions or oils directly to the area immediately before your appointment.
Gentle exfoliation as part of your regular routine can also help keep dead skin from building up around the hair.
Most importantly, don’t shave right before your appointment.
We need the hair there.
What Should You Do After a Brazilian Wax?
Your skin needs a little attention after waxing.
For the first few days, focus on keeping the area clean and minimizing unnecessary friction and irritation.
Once the skin has settled, consistent exfoliation and hydration become important parts of your routine.
This is especially important if you’re prone to ingrown hairs.
At X Rose Beauty, we don’t believe the service should end the second the wax comes off. Proper skin care between appointments plays a major role in how your skin looks and feels when you come back.
What About Ingrown Hairs?
Ingrown hairs happen when hair grows back into or becomes trapped beneath the skin instead of growing normally through the surface.
Exfoliation, hydration and consistent waxing can all be important parts of managing ingrowns.
And this is something we’re especially serious about at X Rose Beauty.
We don’t just wax—we extract.
When appropriate, ingrown extractions are included with our full Brazilian service because removing the hair is only part of taking care of the skin.
How Often Should You Get a Brazilian Wax?
For many people, about every four weeks is a good starting point.
But there isn’t one perfect schedule for everybody.
Some clients may need three weeks. Others may be better at five or six.
Your hair-growth pattern, hormones, previous hair-removal habits and consistency can all affect how quickly your hair returns.
Your waxer can help you figure out the timing that works best for your body.
Is a Brazilian Wax Worth It?
If you’re tired of frequent shaving, razor burn, stubble or constantly maintaining the area at home, Brazilian waxing may be worth trying.
The biggest thing to remember is that waxing works best as a routine, not just a one-time appointment.
Your first wax is the introduction.
Consistency is where you really begin learning how your individual hair and skin respond.
